New limp leaves and black spots
Default New limp leaves and black spots

Hello everyone,

I don't know much about orchids, but I have three now. I am concerned about one of them, a Mtssa. Izumi hybrid. I got the plant in August when it was in bloom, 2 huge spikes, and it has done very well. It has put on a lot of new growth in the past few month, new aerial roots.

I've placed it near east and south facing windows so it gets quite a lot of light. I water it once a week, and I mist the sphagnum moss that I placed around the base of the plant daily to increase humidity.

Recently, some of the leaves have begun to turn slightly yellowish and feel limp compared to the other leaves. There are also some small dark spots on the underside.

Can anybody tell me what this is? I don't know if its an infection or a problem with the environment.

Thanks!

Hello and welcome to OB! I'm not sure what that is but I don't think it's anything too serious. I have a Mtssa and I've recently moved it to lesser light (still bright, but not so strong) because of the seasonal changes of the sun's position. I also have a Rfdra that has a few of those spots on the tips of the leaves, but it's never caused any problems. If I had to guess, I would say it could be from misting on the leaves, which they don't like, too much sun, or too cold an area for them (this part I doubt is it's cause). Perhaps someone else can chime in with more expertize opinions. Again, welcome!

I was concerned because I hadn't noticed a problem until I recently purchased a new Dendrobium. They were next to each other, and shortly after one of the Dendrobium's leaves turned yellow and dropped off. Then I noticed the changes on the Mtssa and I was conernced it had been infected with something. Now another one of the Den's leaves is turned yellow, but it also had a little "white spot" which I think is sunburn, so I'm moved them both away from the window.

Are you sure it's nothing to worry about. My husband always teases me that I kill plants, but I've been doing so well with these so far!

Looks normal to me, they will get these freckles with higher light levels.
Dens will shed old leaves and canes will dry up, this too is normal. Can you post a photo of you're den?

Just sun spots; its your orchid's version of a suntan, nothing to worry about If the spots get toooo prevalent, think about moving it to a spot w/ less sun. They don't need as much sun as a cattleya, for instance, so the south window could be freaking it out...

Oh now I understand what the problem is....it's jealousy. Yup yup, has to be that. You didn't mention you got a new chid. Now you'll have to butter the Mtssa up and make it feel better. Orchids can be little prima donnas, you know.
How often are you watering the dendrobium? They will shed leaves, but sometimes if they aren't getting enough water, their leaves will yellow and fall off. I'm not trying to make you paranoid, just wondering what your watering regime is.
I think it's a matter of light, though, and nothing too serious.
