Thank you. I can't stand the thought of such a wonderful, unusual gift being lost to the family. I really regret that things like this didn't mean more to me or interest me when I was younger and my grandfather was still alive. This is something I realy want preserved, and want to help my mom to do that with a very cool project she has in mind once I track down some pictures.

I've often regretted not being more interested in my grandparents, who are all passed away now. I try to make up for it by being really interested in my parents, aunts and uncles, and cousins. I think it is fantastic that you are tracking down the plants. What a wonderful adventure!

You should write an article about it for a gardening magazine!

Jim, once you have a list of plants you seek, it would be good to list them here so that others could help in your search. I love to look for stuff like this. Also, Google may pick it up and then anyone may stumble on it. Good Luck!

Good Luck Jim.
It sounds like your grandfather was an interesting gentleman, who honored his family by naming his orchid crosses after them. When you find pictures of the different orchids please post pictures here, too. I think it would be another kind of tribute to him, besides the one your mother is planning.

Kind Regards,
Melanie

An article! /headdesk

The idea didn't even occur to me, probably because I've been so inactive with my writing. I love the idea.

I'm taking the list of names I was so graciously provided with me today when I see my aunt. That way we can consult over them and add any names that I don't recognize, and see if she has anything of my grandfather's that might provide any of the three or so names I know I'm still missing.

The names that I know for certain are part of my search are:

Epicattleya Brian David

Epicattleya Catherine Margaret

Sophrocyclia Christopher John, Encylaelia Christopher John, Epilaelia Christopher John

Epicattleya James Joseph, Epilaeliocattleya James Joseph
Stacyara James Joseph (Not sure if this is the same breed as above or not)

Epicattleya Janis Monique

Sophleyclia Joseph Cornelis, Epilaeliocattleya Joseph Cornelia, Catcylaelia Joseph Cornelis, Epilaeliocattleya Joseph Cornelis

Catyclia Joseph Riley, Epicattleya Joseph Riley

Catyclia Ruth Beckenbach, Epicattleya Ruth Beckenbach, Epicattleya Ruth Beckenback

Epicattleya Susan Margaret Wehlburg, Epilaeliocattleya Susan Margaret Wehlburg, Stacyara Susan Margaret Wehlburg

I've included all the variations on the names that I was given. That way something might turn up on a less updated list which might not have the current classification name. I found the Epicattleya Joseph Riley at Epicattleya Joseph Riley There may also be more than one type named Joseph Riley, because there was a Sr. (my grandfather), a Jr., and a III.

That was about the only success I had via Google.

Hi all,

I just thought I'd pop in with an update, although honestly not much has changed so far. It does appear that the list of names that I gave earlier in this thread does encompass all the crosses named for family. It seems that my grandfather primarily named them for us grandkids with the exceptions of my grandmother and my aunt. I have managed to get my hands on the original registration applications, but still no pictures as of yet. If anyone has any suggestions where to look beyond Google, I'd definitely appreciate them.

THanks,
Jim

Not as of yet, but that was already the next thing in line barring any more promising suggestions.
