Default 2 New Minis in Terrariums

Last week, I saw a small terrarium that I had to have. So then I had to buy an orchid to go in it!

And then I had to buy 2 minis just because. I previously had five, but they died in a moving accident.

I adore Oak Hill Gardens (I went there when I lived in Chicago). They have an incredible selection of minis to choose from (not to mention excellent customer service). Anyway, here are the goodies:

Small terrarium: Haraella retrocalla in a pot. I just got it, so I haven't figured out the proper set up. To improvise, I put a shot glass full of pebbles and water in there to add some humidity. I'll figure it out eventually.

Larger terrarium: Ghost orchid that I've had for a while (you can see it from the back) and my new Ascocentrum pumilum. There are pebbles in the bottom filled with water also.

I know what you're going to say--I need air movement! I'm also working on this, but at least both of them have some kind of opening (the larger one has small holes at the top which the plants are hanging on, and the smaller one has an open front). But for now, everyone is happy and healthy. (crosses fingers)

Also, for anyone interested in minis, I'd like to recommend "Miniature Orchids" by Steven A. Frowine. I'll write up a review under book reviews soon.

Enjoy! Any advice on these minis is most welcome!!

Nice tanks! And nice plants as well. Some of my best plants came from Oak Hill and I plan an excursion there in June in connection with a vacation.

I'm glad you guys like them. I don't have the room or funds for the big dog terrariums, so I go for the little ones.

I got the bigger one at a garden shop in Chicago for about $40 and the smaller one at a local shop for $18. These little glass beauties make a nice addition to the house. Here are some pictures of my old orchid collection in them before they...passed away....it's an old blog post:

As it happens, Oak Hill is having a sale on minis right now. If you haven't already, take a look.

Nice orchid houses
To make air move - put computer cooler inside.
40 cm slow blower (<1000 rpm) - for small orchidarium - 40 cm standard blower (2000+ rpm) is enough.
In greater orchidarium put cooler into lower part blowing upwards.
