Mtdm. Ruffles 'Scent of a Woman' and new to me.

Greetings, I am a new member here on the forums, I just got this Mtdm. Ruffles 'Scent of a Woman' for my birthday and have had not the best luck with orchids in the past.

so I thought I would come here to discuss and find direction and tips on keeping it alive.

a few day's after bringing it home and letting it adjust, I gave it a fertilizer bath.

it still looks ok but I am just making sure I document my every move.

Hi M, I am not familiar with Mtdm. Sorry, but if you could take a pic and post it, that might help. Also, I am sure others will come in and know what it is right away. (I'm not the most experienced in orchids as others are here). My purpose in this reply is to say, "Welcome!"

Welcome to the board!

While I do not have this cross, I do have Miltondium Issaku Nagata 'Volcanoe Queen' that looks like this in bloom:



As for culture, keep it moist all the time it is growing or the leaves will pleat badly (they actually stick inside the sheath and fold up, trying to get out.) After the pseudobulbs mature and plump up, watch for spikes between the outermost leaf and the pseudobulb. Sometimes these will fold also.



After the plant starts to produce the new pseudobulbs and have a few small roots starting, it's time to repot the plant. They like plenty of air at the roots, but also lots of water, except while resting. Mine is in double spike right now and should be out in bloom about April.

I water by pouring a weak fertilizer mix through the pot, soaking the whole root ball, about twice a week. I also spray the top of the potting mix and base of the pseudobulbs with pure RO water every morning. This is a light spraying to encourage new roots.

Don't mist this plant and avoid getting the leaves wet, if possible. They hate this and will produce miriads of little black spots if you spray them.

For starters, your Mtdm is a Miltonidium which is a hybrid of a Miltonia and Oncidium.
Specifically, Mtdm. Ruffles 'Scent of a Woman' is a primary hybrid of
Miltonia warscewiczii - IOSPE PHOTOS
and
Oncidium ornithorhynchum - IOSPE PHOTOS
It is described at Cloud's Orchids as a "compact grower produces sprays of cute amethyst/old rose/magenta/ivory flowers with sweet fragrance. Prefers moderate conditions. Good for under lights, windowsill or solarium culture.

This orchid has been the best bloomer in my collection. It blooms 2 or 3 times a year, very easy to grow, loves a bright indirect north/east light, water occasionally, keep humidity in a medium range. Really not picky and just keeps on blooming. I love it. It has a wonderful fragrance in the mornings.

I actually bought this orchid yesterday at Trader Joe's for $7.99 (I know Trader Joe's may not be the coolest place to get orchids, but I have gotten several interesting varieties for very inexpensive considering that they are large blooming plants with healthy roots)! I was so excited when I got home and smelled it in the morning- it smells like a gorgeous mixture of vanilla and sugar with just a hint of lemon. Mine looks basically like the picture except that the color is more vibrant, and the picture just can't do justice to that velvety patch at the top of the labellum, and the splash of bright orange that mine has right in the middle of that velvety patch. Suffice it to say, I'm thrilled with my new acquisition...Hopefully I can use the advice listed here to keep it alive

What does anyone think of mounting this orchid? I have had several orchids whose roots rotted, so I tend to like mounting orchids since I can see the roots best that way.

I have quite a few orchids from TJs

I don't know if this would be the best candidate for mounting - I'm sure it can be done, but I would expect that this one would like to remain a bit moist. Well draining media that retains some moisture should suit it. Don't allow media to dry out, but don't have it be soggy.
Moderately bright light I would think. (I don't grow this one, but do have several Onc. alliance intergenerics that do well this way.

If you start a new thread asking for help/care info for this one, you may get more answers - I am pretty sure some members grow this.

I also got mine from TJ's 2 years ago.

I repotted into Hydroton and converted it to Semi Hydroponic.
It gets brighter light than phalaenopsis but less than cattleyas.

Mine is in a greenhouse during the spring/summer months and it definitely likes the cooler area. I put it near the misters.
High temps cause it to sulk and the bloom quality suffers.

It has done well, lots of growths and spikes.
