How many orchids do you have and how many orchids do you usually buy at one time??

1) Over 200 and growing (added 5 today from Ft. Lauderdale show - mostly oncidiums)

2)1-12 or so. depends on the show. Also do societies in the area and usually pick up 1-3 at a meeting (raffles and such)

3)1 show and I was hooked!!!

Wow, where do you keep so many? Right now, I think I've pretty much hit my limit, maybe I can add 2 or 3 more, unless I build another orchidarium in which case I can then get alot more.

I have about 45-50 in limited space. I have bought as few as 1 and as many as 10. I tend to cull periodically.

1. If you mean pots, I have close to 150 at the first and last count....I was never into counting them. I also have twin rooming of vandas for example as they are quite easy to do...saves space too. I don't use a greenhouse. They are all outside. The vandas are mainly in sunny area. The rest are in the orchid stand and pergolas with/without cover.

2. Depends on price and size of plant. Usually 3-4. But then sometimes I don't buy any at all if I have no intention to in the first place. A matter of principle I guess.

3. I would say about a year too. By then I may have gotten rid of a couple of rotten ones. It is a matter of space too...

It has it's challenges too, Tindo...You know the weather (rains by the ocean at times) and insects(its fair game). I now keep a H2O based aerosol handy. It was introduced by a local forum friend for treating my Cycus Palm when new shoots start to grow.

Three pots were blown off their perch a couple of days ago....one broke as it fell on to the driveway(Ishould have thought about that possibility) and I had just repot it this morning. I'll keep the lower cutting for a while as they are bound to grow new shoots.

Hamizao, I LOVE your PERGOLA! in your gallery! Did you build it or buy it ??? That would be so perfect for my area too. Seems like they cost so much to have built , wish they came in kits...

I actually had it custom made to fit the space available.
Some makers do not use a single nail or screw. Mine has 4 large screws at the top 4 corners.



Some ppl here buy the timber and have it cut and built to cut cost. I didn't have the time to consider all those procedure! If I like something, I'd want to have it fast.

I have just revarnished it 3 months ago. All the top beams can be brought down. So it was quite easy. I have now allowed a climber up the post. It would take a while before it is able to provide a bit more shade. It has trumpet-like flowers much like the Allamanda. The one in the picture is white in colour. I have a red variety up another post. Actually. I only knew it is a climber when the new shoots grew..... I would have to transfer it to a bigger pot soon.



The canopy must be the orchid house. It is a 3-tiered metal stand with a grilled roof to hang orchids from. The roof is covered with strawlike material, common for such purposes. They are usually custom made.
