Alexis,

So YOU'RE the one who stole that Blc 'Colorful ' from me at the Redlands. I sadly blamed Suzanne for it earlier but she claimed it wasn't her. LOL.

What I learned from my only Redlands show is if you see something you want, buy it NOW, because it will be gone when you make a second pass. I ended up buying one that wasn't in great condition and it died on me, so I learned my lesson.

40 at one show.?? I'll have to get behind you at the next show so my husband won't think I've gone crazy when I buy more than 6 orchids at a show..

What's the big show in Miami this weekend?

If it was me, Linnie, I'm sorry! (Though I doubt I'm the guilty party - my obsession these days is miniature species!) But you're right - with the feeding frenzy that goes on at Redland, if you see something you like, you better get it while the gettin's good.

If you have the time and the desire for a road trip, I strongly recommend coming to the Miami International Orchid Show this weekend. It is second only to the Redland fest (for Florida shows, that is.) It's sponsored by the South Florida OS, and vendors come from around the world. Here's a link, that includes a vendor list South Florida Orchid Society

I'll be there when the doors open Friday morning! (Then, we're off to the Keys for the weekend. The Big 4-0 (gulp) is in a few days.)

thanks so much for your feedback. I haven't had any die, only a couple don't look too hot.

I'm so addicted as well. almost every weekend I pick up at least 1-2, but I am running out of places to put them. Kinda chicken to put some in the full sun, since they're on my pool deck.

Do you know when the Redland show is?

The Redland show is always the weekend after Mother's Day, so it will be May 18-20 this year.

Ah hah!! I did read it.

I think your Grand Caymen needs a few more to fill it out. Maybe a slab type Orchid or two.

Default Redland and 'how many I...'

Two brazilian nurseries will be present in the Redland International Orchid Festival (may 19-21)

Bela Vista Orchids :: Bela Vista Orchids - Assis/SP/Brazil
they will accept pre-order untill 15th march 2007
Bela Vista has lots of botanic species

Floraria Orquidários Reunidos
Brazilian Orchids from Florália
they will accept pre-order 45 days in advance (minimum)

How many orchids I have?
I have some control only over my two main collections:
29 different (species or varieties) Bifrenarias (almost all species described - I need only two, Bifr calcarata and Bifr venezuelana)
14 different Stanhopeas
Most of it are in double or triple
I have also a great collection of brazilian rupiculous Laelias (Hoffmannseggella), but not an inventory...
Gongoras, Coryanthes, Coelogynes, others Laelias, Cattleyas, Dendrobium, Cymbidium...I think more than 100 but less than 150 total

How many I bought each time?
one to 20 (in Redland I hope to buy more than this! - if I'll be able to go there)

Frederico

1. Looks like about 46 now. i sold 9 recently at our societies auction (either too big, or didnt want what it was).

2. I forgot the question...most purchased at one time. maybe about 15, from our societies auction the year before. Yes, some that i sold back were from the first auction. Some stuff sells for so cheap at the auction, that i began impulse buying. Newbie mistakes.

3. Now i buy 1 or 2. I tend to be looking for something in particular now, like a particular species, and dont buy them just because they are there.

I have about 120, probably half are dendrobiums, hard and soft cane. I also have cattleyas, oncidium, epidendrum, vanda, maxillaria, cymbidium, dockrillia, sarcochillius, spider orchid (?), coelgyne, milltassia, stanhopea and a couple of very sick looking paphiopedilum. I have others with no labels that I don't know what they are.

On the very rare occasion I go anywhere that sells orchids I'll buy as many as I can of those types that I like. I'm not greatly into cymbidiums. There are not many orchid nurseries in Western Australia and only the occasional orchid show. I buy most of my orchids from eBay. I also pinch pieces from any that my Mother in law gets.

I need to have a bit of a rethink about how i'm growing my orchids as although quite a few of them bloom it's only like one or two flowers and the plants don't get very big.

That's one reason I joined this board to get help with them.

Marion
