Reblooming Phaius Dan Rosenberg Female
Default Reblooming Phaius Dan Rosenberg

Hi! I am new to orchids and bought a beautiful hybrid orchid with a tag that says Phaius Dan Rosenberg. It has stopped blooming and the stalk that the blooms were on has dried up and turned brown. The leaves look good. Should I cut off the dried up stalk or leave it on the plant. I know the plant should rebloom at some point, but I did not know if it makes a new stalk or if I should leave the old one. Thanks for any input!

: Welcome to the OB!
Sounds like a phalenopsis. I highly recommend checking out the forum on phalenopsis here. There's lots of helpful people and great information!
When a spike turns brown and dried up, the plant is ready to get rid of it. Feel free to trim it.
If you can, go ahead and post some pics of the orchid.

There are a few people that have Phaius - I don't grow it but here are a few past threads about it -

Phaius is a terrestrial orchid. It doesn't matter whether you cut the old stalk or not (Probably look better cut thought) because it won't re-bloom, or make Keikei's from the spent stalk like some types of orchids will. It will make a new stalk. I have a Phaius tankerville that has gone dormant a couple of times and lost it's leaves. Mine only blooms once a year, but I don't know if they are all that way. I only have the one, so I don't know if that's typical, but I suspect it is. I know most Phaius species can get pretty large too.

I really like this genus, so I'm going to eavesdrop on your thread in hopes I can learn more about them from some Phaius experts.

Thank you for the information on reblooming my orchid. There are also two new plants coming up in the pot with this orchid. Should I leave them all in the same pot, or should I go ahead and try to move the new plants? This is such a beautiful plant, and I would really like not to kill it by doing the wrong thing!!!

I grow both of my Phaius in large pots with a mixture of potting soil, perlite and charcoal. They can take just about any lighting but tend to do better in slight shade. Keep them moist. I cut the stalks after they've bloomed...and I leave all the babies that pop up right where they are.

Here's my Phaius tankervillae at it's last blooming (in a 14" pot). I also have Dan Rosenberg 'Tropical Ice'.

They are really nice chids and I look forward to seeing pictures of yours in bloom

The new growth is a good sign. Don't divide it, just let it form a nice, large clump. Maybe the next blooming will have multiple spikes!

OK, thanks everybody. I am sort of relieved to just leave the new growth in the pot until I know a little bit more about what I am doing! As soon as it reblooms, I will put a picture on. It looks a lot like the second picture Susanne B posted. It is really pretty. The leave are pretty as well!

I agree with leave it alone! Phaius are awesome plants and won't rebloom after this years bloom. Keep that new growth going! Remember to feed it! I use half strength Miracle grow every other watering or 2.
