Thats something Im going to haf to be careful about as I do it a lot. I try to leave a good layer of lava rocks under the medium so the roots don’t set in the water, unless they decide to grow down to it.

Don't do that! Phals want humid air, not wet. So water well (pulling air into the root zone) and let drain. If it dries fast in warm weather, just water more often.

Thanks for the suggestion. I grow lot of my orchids in lava rock itself so I keep the dish of water under the pot and I did same with this which was my mistake as it was potted in bark and even media might be bit old as I got it from local nursery. But I will keep in mind .

Thanks Roberta, definitely will keep in mind. I have some orchids in lava rock and clay pot, they dries so quickly so I keep dish of water under the pot, I never had issue with lava rock but looks like bark is different thing.
Thanks.

When I first started using lava rocks as a medium, Roberta gave me good advice on not getting carried away with it. As normal, she was right on the money, as a good many orchids will not take to it as well as others. Seems in my opinion the roots dont always like the cooler temperature. I still use it a lot, hard headed as I am I just try to learn when to and when not to, as to when the plant likes it.

Yes, I do like lava rocks as well, but its true some orchids do very well with lava rock and some not.
Recently I have potted some of my Oncidiums in lava rock in semi-hydro setup, wondering if you have experience with Oncidiums in lava rock.
Thanks.
