Default How to water sphag

Hi! I have another question. I have baby orchids in moist sphag. How do I water them so they won't get soggy and ruin the roots?

I tried misting them but it takes too many bursts of mist for each plant.

While I don't know the exact answer to your question, I do have some Neofinetia in sphagnum and I just go by feel of the moss. When it feels barely moist (a judgement call) then I water with watering can. I never mist them.

I have lots of things in sphag because it works for my growing conditions. Some items are mounted and I spray them daily until the sphag is good and moist. I turn the nozzle so more water comes out with each spray. The potted ones are watered when they feel 'light'. I make a judgment call based on the actual weight of the pot and how the moss feels to me. Sphag can be hard to re-wet if it dries out too much. If this happens, either let the pot sit in a saucer of water for an hour or so until the water moistens the top of the moss, or if it is a mount then spray it really well.
Best of luck!

Cruetsonly, thanks for your input. Can you tell me what your "conditions" are? I want to know what kind of weather etc... is suitable for using sphag exclusively.

Thanks

I don't use it exclusively, but I grow indoors in Utah so I need something to help retain the moisture. I grow in my bathroom and run a large fan 24/7. I keep the humidity up with humidifiers.
