Do Phals Prefer Frequent Wet-Dry Cycles?
Default Do Phals Prefer Frequent Wet-Dry Cycles?

Hi all, I'm repotting one of my phals and was wondering if I should use 100% sphagnum moss, or a mix of 50% bark and 50% moss.

My environment has been warming up lately, 80F (26.7C) days and 75F (23.9C) nights. The relative humidity stays between 60-70%.

Of course, the phal will need more watering in the bark and moss mix, but that isn't a problem for me. I was just wondering if the phal would prefer more frequent wet-dry cycles?

The goal with a Phal is "humid air" rather than 'constant wet' in the root zone. So they don't want to dry out completely, but don't want to stay soggy either. Either medium will work fine - sphagnum will need watering less often, so it's whatever works with your watering habits.

The main concern is your winter temperatures. Phals. are warm to hot growing plants. Moss cools the root zone as water evaporates. This isn't a good choice for people who keep their homes cool in winter.
