Why are the phalaenopsis roots turning purple?
Default Why are the phalaenopsis roots turning purple?

Hi everyone, Ive had a phalaenopsis noid for a few years now. It's always been healthy but I repotted it recently and I started to notice some of the roots starting looking sick - they started turning paler or red/purple and looking dried out or mushy. I took it out of the pot and was surprised to see how purple some of them have turned. My guess is that the media I potted it in was finer and it's staying wetter longer than usual.

Please let me know if you have any idea what could be going on. I really love this noid.

Thanks!

I'm not sure what's going on. The medium is much finer in particle size than I would use for a Phal.; the most important thing for them is plenty of air at the roots. This medium also looks as though it would cool a lot from evaporation; if your house is already cool, it could lead to cold and wet roots, not good for a Phal.

I don't repot Phals. except during warm weather. During winter in many relatively cool houses, they do much better kept mostly dry.

Thanks for your response. Yes, im realizing i made a mistake with this media, I had accidently ordered fine bark and went ahead and used it when I shouldn't have. I have repotted this into a chunkier bark now. Fingers crossed it'll recover. I did use this same mix on my paphs and smaller phals and they seen to be doing ok and drying out as expected. This phal however was taking a long time to dry out in this mix... 😕 😞 you live and you learn.

I have seen this on things I pot in moss. The discoloration never hurt the plants.
