To be given an orchid "Tokyo Blue" what is it?
Question To be given an orchid "Tokyo Blue" what is it?

I friend of mine is giving me an orchid. He says it's a "Tokyo Blue". He doesn't know what kind of an orchid it is and had trouble describing it to me. It blooms twice a year. What am I getting...can anyone help the rookie

I think... you will be the proud owner of a Vanda
But just to be sure, does your friend have it hanging in a basket with no medium? Sometimes people grow them in pots too, but generally a vanda doesn't need any medium at all, and like to have their roots growing free.

Oh wait! Here's a picture Does it look like this?

It should be a Vanda ..
RHS (Royal Horticulture Society) has it registered as Vanda Tokyo Blue
This is what it should look like - http://www.orchideerare.com/PagineFo...VTokyoBlue.jpg
It's parents being the cross of Vanda Chindavat (a hybrid) and Vanda coerulea (a species)
Here is are the parents
Vanda Chindavat - http://www.orchidboard.com/community...chindavat.html
and Vanda coerulea - Orchid of the Week Library: Vanda coerulea

Oh it's a beauty!

Dorothy,
Is Vanda coerulea actually that nearly true blue in real life or is that a little trick photography? I have yet to see an orchid with what I would call a nearly primary blue color.
If it really is the same color as Dorothy's picture, where can I get one?

Aaron, I don't think any flower can actually be truly "blue". I think blue vandas are called "blue" because the hue of purple is cooler and falls more on the blue scale than lavender, which is much warmer. Sorry just the of a professional artist, speaking

Regardless... I LOVES the blues!

I sort of agree. As a Photographer and artist I have a pretty good eye and have seen some supposedly blue flowers. The only one I would consider truley "blue" is 'Blue Sailers' or Chicory which is incredibly difficulty to capture in it's true blue color. None of the supposed blue Phals or Vandas have appeared blue to me. Most are a shade of light violet.
