Why 2 different C Dominiana? Male
Default Why 2 different C Dominiana?

Why are there 2 C Dominiana? And can someone tell me how that came to be?

Was the 1899 name for the (dowiana x purpurata) hybrid originally Lc Dominiana and just became C Dominiana when everything switched over?

Did I just answer my own question?

Thank you!

Great question!

C Dominiana (1859) = (C. intermedia x C. maxima)

Lc Dominiana was (C. dowiana x L. purpurata) which became C. Dominiana when L. purpurata was reclassified as C. purpurata, creating a conflict ... two different grexes with the same name. The problem was solved by adding the date of registration, so now this one is C. Dominana (1899) = (C dowiana x C purpurata).

There are quite a few grexes that ended up in this situation due to the reclassification of the Brazilian Laelias as Cattleyas. The year of registration is added to the name to distinguish one from the other.

Interesting! I didn't know they did that. A little confusing but easier than sorting through hundreds of hybrids to correct all the conflicts!

should we throw Cattleya dormaniana into the fray?

When all of this hit the fan, Orchidwiz had some interesting errors and difficulties for a couple of updates... for instance, one could look up a hybrid and get different answers depending on one's search path. Databases don't do well with ambiguous relationships, sometimes spin out into infinite loops and other bad things. Not just the individual grexes, but also their progeny. This was a clever way to get around the problem. I guess there weren't any instances where two "ambiguous" hybrids had the same registration year.

Also, the capitalization of hybrid names becomes very important. C schilleriana is a species. (lower case "s") Lc Schilleriana (C intermedia x L purpurata) became C. Schillleriana (upper case "S") (C intermedia x C purpurata)
