Question What is my cattleya doing?

Hello, I was given these orchids at my OS. They are from a member who has passed away. They were neglected for quite some time. They have started to grow, but I am not sure what exactly is going on. I don't know what type these are either. If someone could explain what is happening, I would greatly appreciate it.

Welcome to the Orchid Board!

They are starting to grow. The new growths will form roots from their bases.

Most have been severely underwatered for some time. They will depend on the new roots to keep the plant alive, so it is important that you take good care of the new roots that form.

The first photo might be a Dendrobium or a Cattleya, but I can't see enough of the plant to tell. The other photos show Cattleyas.

I would suggest watering a lot more. Don't let the medium stay dry for more than a few hours. The old roots will absorb some water but not much.

Try to increase the humidity as much as possible. The new roots will stop growing in typical household humidity unless they can grow into medium. You can increase humidity by putting them into some kind of enclosure, or by putting a large plastic bag over them.

Some have new growth coming from high up on the stems. This is not normal growth, and is usually a sign there are no viable growing points lower on the stem. I would consider repotting so they are lying sideways in a wide, shallow container so the new growth is level with them medium.

Plants in this state shouldn't get as much light as they would want if healthy. Bright shade should be enough until they are well re-established.

Hello and welcome. Since you received them at your OS, why not ask members since you're all together? They probably knew who had owned them and most folks in an OS are very happy to pass along knowledge.

Thank you so much for the detailed advice. Well, all of the photos are of the same plant...so I guess I will have to find out what type of plant this is! Thank you. 🙏

I will have to ask this coming thurs. His passing was very recent the last time I went, I didn't want to seem insensitive by asking the types of plants immediately.. thank you. 🙏

Then it's a Cattleya. What I suggested is what I would do.
