Top layer of leca drying out
Question Top layer of leca drying out

Hi there. I just potted my large phrags into semi hydro. They are in big pots due to their size and in turn the top layer is drying out. How can I get all of the leca moist? Also do I need to water with ro/ distilled water? Thanks so much for your help

Have you tried adding an evaporation barrier? Ray has instructions on his website.

The top of the LECA is dry because, in your conditions, the evaporation rate is faster than the wicking rate.

The ideal solution is to increase the humidity in the growing area. Failing that, a barrier is a good option.

Me too. Especially with the ones that tend to crawl along the surface, seemingly forever, before putting down roots.
