My orchid is blooming?
Default My orchid is blooming?

Here is a picture of my orchid (Phal)

20221105_203419 by Stan Louka, on Flickr

I have some questions:

1. My orchid is blooming? (It bloomed once this year already)
2. What do you think of the distance of my LED light?
3. Is it a good idea to fertilize it?
4. Do you have some other suggestions?

Yes, it is making more flowers. Many Phalaeopsis make more flower stalks from the unbloomed nodes of existing stalks.

I can't guess about the light distance. That varies with the kind of light and the plant. Phals are low light plants compared to most other orchids. Most people watch the plant and move it closer or farther based on how the plant is doing. You can also use a light meter and calculate how much light it is getting. If it's flowering it is getting enough light.

Fertilizer is necessary for most house plants. There are many different kinds, most of which are fine. Use a fertilizer with the three numbers somewhat close to each other. If you want to fertilize at every watering, use a low concentration. If you want to fertilize less often, use a higher concentration. Many people use 1/8 teaspoon per 4 liters of water at every watering. Others use 1/2 teaspoon per 4 liters of water once every 1-2 weeks.

I would suggest you do some reading here on Orchid Board. There is a huge amount of information in the old threads.

If I put a seedlings heat mat under the tray with water is it going to boost the orchid growth?

Is it strong enough to warm the roots?

That depends on your ambient temperatures. Phals do grow faster when they are warmer. Heat mats do provide extra heat.

I am a new member and had Phals for 3 years.

The picture looks lile a healthy plant that has nice color leaves, new leaves and is wanting to bloom.
You are doing something right!

Do a watch and learn approach on your Phal.

Take estación seca's advice and read this forum, starting in the Phalaenopsis Alliance section and then go to Potting and Beginners.

BUT, I say that with a caution.

As I have been reading I see senior members giving GREAT advice and immediately want to go implement that with my orchids.
You "could" pot your plants in semi-hydo or tightly packed sphagnum or cypress chips, you can buy expensive light meters or plant in a terrarium and all such stuff.

Don't get fussy on your plants.
(I'm talking to myself)

Be patient (Thank You Roberta) and see how it grows.

Yes, warmer will increase growing but unless you are walking around your house in a heavy coat, the temps are probably fine for now.

Heat helps spur growth when low temperatures are the limiting factor. If you have the light, medium, watering, and fertilizing in order, add a seedling mat and watch the magic happen. If something else is missing (not enough light, bad medium, too much/little water, no fertilizer), adding heat will still help but only as much as the other conditions allow.

Most hybrid phals prefer temperatures of 24-30C/75-86F but will tolerate colder temperatures down to 18C/65F without problems (they can also go warmer but I doubt that will be something you need to worry about given your location). Colder than that for overnight temperatures are doable, not usually recommended, but they’ll need higher daytime temperatures to compensate.

Humidity is the last environmental condition to focus on. Humidifiers are the best way to boost humidity. Humidity trays in an open room don’t do anything. In a small closed environment they may be able to boost it a little.

Going slow with changes and closely observing is sage advice, but I also agree that adding a heat matt is pretty much always good idea for phals in the house. Phals really love bottom heat and it adds a little extra security during winter time.
