Help with rootless ascocentrum!!
Default Help with rootless ascocentrum!!

Hi all!!
I received an ascocentrum orchid about 15 days back, and all it's roots were dead. I cut the roots (blackened) and kept the orchid in moss, which is moist. Now, instead of roots, the topmost leaf has started to grow (there is a band of pale green growth at it's base) .
What should I do?

Ascocentrum without roots at all and developing a new leaf, ummmh. As far as I know, they want water but to must quickly dry out, and the substrate around them should not be soaked.

I need to comprehend better!

Cutting all the roots was not a good thing to do... how will the plant take up water? Even a bad root is better than no root - it can still passively transfer water. Now, you just have to hope that it produces some new roots before the lack of water kills it. Don't be surprised if you lose some leaves, especially the lower ones - the plant will try to reduce water loss by transpiration, and that is one of the mechanisms for doing that. It will also draw on reserves from the remaining leaves, and the stem to keep going.

A 'Kelpmax' soak for a few hours might help. Ask Ray.

That might be a challenge for the OP, who is in India. Kelpak is a similar product in the EU, but I doubt that it is readily available outside of the EU. Perhaps a similar product is available?

yes i do have a similar product, but it is not specifically meant for orchids. i use it for my other houseplants.
should i give it a soak in a dilute solution?

i received it in a very bad condition, and it was advertised as a seedling. it'root were all black and mushy, and i cut them (leaving just stubs). it's base was also blackening , and i was sure that it will die.
Imgur: The magic of the Internet
but as you can see there is a band of light growth at the base.

Kelpak is produced in South Africa, and is very broadly distributed.

Time after time, “something similar” has proven not to be, including other products made from the same Kelp species.
