Default Vanda Doctor Needed Dry Leaves

Hi

I am a new orchid keeper based in Singapore, so subject to a tropical climate. Vandas are being kept outdoors.

I was gifted a tall (over 1.5m) Margaret Tan Vanda, it was in flower. I've done my best to care for it but nothing I have done seems to make it healthier.

When I was having some new orchids delivered, the delivery guy basically said it was dead but that separating it into cuttings would perhaps help. He cut it up into 4 "plants"

These range from a tangle of old roots to what would appear to most people to be a new vanda.

Amazingly, they've all developed signs of new root growth, the continued problem is that the leaves are all shrivelled up and very very dry, even turning brown

They are in shaded sunlight most of the day with direct sun early morning, late afternoon.

My watering regime has changed from weekly, to twice daily. I have started to give growth fertiliser twice per week

Temperatures are stable low 30s Deg C daytime, mid 20s Deg C night time.

Any pointers to keeping these alive would be most welcome.

Welcome to the Orchid Board!

It is a water issue. They need a lot. Now that you are watering more they should all start growing. This one has very sun loving ancestors. As they recover and start growing you can move them into more light.

you hear something new every day.

So they delivery guy knocked on your door, hands you your vandas, which were not packaged? happens to have some pruning shears in his back pocket and offers to cut it for you? Here they are so busy they leave the package on the doorstep and bolt.

I'm not entirely sure what the benefit of him chopping up your orchid achieved nor would I let mine do something like that. He just set the plant back years and I seriously mean years.

Those old leaves will not improve much btw, that plant in your picture needs to produce a new side plant in order to survive now that it is chopped so that is what you need to look out for while keeping the roots well watered and well aerated.
