Default Cattleya Roots Do Not Turn Green When Watered

Hello OB!

My Cattleya Dowiana has recently put out a lot of new root growth since its repot a few months ago. However when I water the orchid the roots do not turn green- which leads me to believe they are not absorbing water. I submerge the basket in another pot with distilled water from anywhere from 5-10 minutes. Any thoughts about what could be happening?

The nice thing is that ------ this non-greening feature seen in relatively new roots when watered ------ is a known typical feature among orchid growers.

I don't know the mechanism behind it. Maybe the new roots have a waxy protective coating that eventually disappears with time.
