My oppinion is that, those who grow orchids (or any other plants), at some point will need to go the chemical route. The target should be to use it the least times possible.

Thanks Camille. What would you do if you were me? My greenhouse is in my basement, so I'd like to use very toxic chemicals only as a last resort. I've had some unfortunate bud blast lately caused by these thrips so I am ready to do what must be done!

With my temps I think I need to apply a foliar spray treatment every 4 days, 4 times. What would you use? In addition I was thinking I would do a couple applications of imidacloprid as a drench to get any pupa in the soil along with the first couple foliar treatments.

Awesome information, thank you. i managed to isolate the "host" orchid- a Phaius. I am pretty sure its spidermites because they were concentrated on the buds, or new growth, of my orchid. I know they do this. It could be aphids but I am leaning towards spidermites.
Anyway- reptiles are out- some of you mentioned ladybugs which are doable in the summer. I am going with a pesticide- as many of you pointed out- they have a place in horticulture if used correctly.
Finally- lesson learned. I am a bit dissapointed that many orchid sites- including AOS, point out that orchid's are rarely bothered by pests.
Lesson learned. Thank you, orchid board, for your help and input.
