No but seriusly a top layer of moss is generally beneficial unless one sees it is staying damp too long but I cannot see that, the roots and even the plant! look on the drier side.

So ask yourselves this, if the plant did not have one little yellow leaf - to me it looks completely healthy - would you be suggesting to change anything?

To me it looks like a root or a flower spike is pushing through the leaves and this can cause part of a leaf to die - it is a sign of good health when a plant is producing lots of new stuff even if it has to break through a leaf to do so.

I would not remove the moss as to me the plant looks perfectly healthy

I do agree with you though. I don’t think the moss stays damp for too long. It’s pretty much completely dry after 3 days.
Yes, maybe the yellowing leaf is not a huge concern. I like that conclusion!

Hi everyone, I just want to give an update on the leaf and ask if there are any further thoughts on the issue. Half of the leaf is now essentially all yellow and dead, while the other half is still fully green and attached to the base of the plant. It's very strange.

I'm still stumped on the issue - I think perhaps it's either root rot, or the temperature has been too cold (it's consistently about 68F in the house). Or, maybe it's nothing of concern, as orchidtinkerer suggested?

Any further thoughts? Should I cut off the leaf completely or let it be?

Just let it be. Eventually it'll drop when it's ready, in the meantime the green part continues to photosynthesize and nourish the plant. Your house is on the cool side for a Phal - it won't be damaged but may grow only slowly. As far as roots are concerned, I don't recall when you said that you last potted it. If it was recent (less than 6-8 months ago) don't disturb it - if it needs to grow more roots, it needs to be left alone to do that.
