Man, I've been tasting the honeydew from my orchids from time to time for probably the last thirty years. It's just sugar, sucrose, the same sugar that sugar cane produces, There's no surge of sugar cane farmers coming down with Covid-19. It has a sweet, pleasant flavor, and I'm certainly not dead yet. If I die of orchid honeydew consumption, I'll donate my body to science so we can research this further. But orchid honeydew does not cause Covid-19. Coronavirus is not a plant disease. I'm gonna go out side to my orchid growing area and look for some honeydew to sample now.

I just have known people who worry constantly about every little thing that might kill them, and that seems like a miserable way to live, in constant worry. I'm just going to live my life, enjoying the things that bring me pleasure, and when God is ready to take me home, He'll take me. He won't need my help, and He won't ask my permission. Maybe it will be a car accident, maybe it will be orchid honeydew, but He'll find a way, no matter how carefully I live my life.

I like to watch people who will only eat organic food spraying all kinds of pesticides and fungicides on the orchids in their houses. And smoking.

to be clear....i am not one of those people...

this is the internet and i don't want to advocate anyone do anything dumb.....that said.

i live with dirt under my nails and I was more speaking about the "into the wild" scenario of eating things you don't know.

i had a buddy find a small egg once camping..it was like small marble size and he was sure it was a grouse....i said, i don't even think there are grouse here and that is certainly a lizard egg....he cooked it (thank god!) and arrogantly ate it (mind you we had lots and lots of food and he was not even dared to do so....)

he was so ill in the morning....like, stay in the cold-as-hell-river-while-you-sort-that-sh1t-out sort of ill

we even brought eggs

I do agree here with DC - fully - based on looking out for everybody.

If we casually prompt somebody to taste some of that super-glue-looking substance (the sap) - and it just so-happens (by some chance) to be laced with something nasty (eg. some sort of bacteria or pathogen or whatever recently got on it - that could possibly cause some serious health issue) - and that person gets into a bad way, then that's a huge thing on our back.

Also - interestingly, there is pretty much zero information found online (on the internet) about whether that stuff can be just casually eaten (in the same way we pick a fruit off a tree and eat it after washing it etc) safely.

Lack of safety information or food safety details about this stuff should be considered ----- the risks that is.

Now ----- DC - while we can only laugh about that incident of your friend now ----- I'll laugh about it.

Yes, I know people like that, and it is just perplexing to me. It's like, what are you thinking? And I know people who are organic gardeners, but they use "organic" pesticides that are natural, but way more toxic than any of the common chemical pesticides you can easily find anywhere. They think because it's natural, it must be safter, but that is not always the case. Some organic pesticides can make you just as sick, if not sicker, than chemical ones.

Alright, well then I will amend my statement. Yes, I frequently sample orchid honeydew, and I have not yet come to any harm from it, although that is not to say that I never will. Although 30 years of doing so indicates to me that it is a very unlikely scenario and the danger is very low. However, I would like to discourage others from doing the same. Like you said, if somebody tasted orchid honeydew on my advice, and then got sick, of course I would feel horrible. So kids, do as I say, not as I do. Don't lick the honeydew. Leave it for the ants haha.

Why would you eat wild unidentified eggs when you brought a proper supply of food into the woods with you? And wild eggs are likely to be fertile, unlike chicken eggs, and they are likely to have a partially formed embryo inside. That would be disgusting to cook an egg, eat it, and find crunchy bones inside of whatever animal was developing in that egg. I know people eat balut (duck eggs with almost fully formed duck embryos inside them that are then boiled and eaten, bones and all), but those eggs are of known origin, not wild collected. Many people enjoy balut in the areas where they are popular (Vietnam, I think? Somewhere in South Asia, I'm pretty sure). It is absolutely not something I would want for myself, but if you're into them, then go for it. But don't eat unidentified wild eggs hahahaha. I'm sorry your friend got sick, but it's a little funny in its own way haha.

But I like the orchid honeydew. It's like a little treat my orchids give me for taking such good care of them. I'm going to continue sampling the honeydew, and if I get sick from if, I'll post about it here, and you are all welcome to say, "I told you so!" hahaha. Or if I die, then we have a definite answer, and I trusts you guys to launch a campaign warning people about the dangers of honeydew. I know you'll do me proud

But I just like to live my life without constantly worrying about what might kill me. I try to stay healthy. I don't eat too much red meat, I don't drink, I don't smoke, I eat a varied diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables, and I try to take care of my health, I wear a mask in public right now because of Covid, and I wash my hands a lot, but I'm not going to life my every day worrying about what might or might not kill me at any given moment. I just do me, try to live my best life, and try to get as much enjoyment out of life as I can. I'll let God, or whatever higher power may exist (I think I mostly identify as agnostic, I'm spiritual and I pray, but I don't pray to the God of the bible. I pray to whatever Creator may be out there), worry about the small stuff. When my number is up, my number up, and there's probably nothing I can do about the will of the supreme being.
