Seed Pod
Smile Seed Pod

Hi Everyone

I am new to this so please bear with me.
I have successfully hand pollinated my Moth Orchid (phalaenopsis) and it has now been almost 3 months. A seed pod has formed but i was wondering how long would I normally have to wait before I can harvest the seed.

Also I was reading up about how they should be sown, a couple of website say have to have a sort of special material which we do not have here so i was thinking about trial planting whereby i will plant some with the parent, some with moss and some in barky material just to see what happens. What do you think?

The seeds are extremely small from my understanding and so not have any nutrients like a regular seed. Orchids need a fungus that supplies the nutrients to the seed in nature. When seeds are grown by our hands, they need to be sown in a nutrient rich agar. Planting them in mods or bark will not work.

It's not just agar that you need. The agar must contain a variety of nutrients and must be prepared and maintained sterile through the sowing, germination and growth stages.
