New phalaenopsis rescue with sticky stuff, patches, black leaf tip
Default New phalaenopsis rescue with sticky stuff, patches, black leaf tip

Hi guys. I’ve got a new phal rescue from the Bay Area. It was left in the same compacted spahgnum moss for 3 years. Root bound when I got it. I reported it in fresh media. Now we are in a much drier place than the Bay Area. I have a humidifier and fan on my orchids but this one has some weird problems.

Sticky sap leaking from the leaves. No obvious scale I can see so I figured it was using the sap to equalize pressure in it’s leaves.

White patches. Scars maybe?

Black patches? It was in the same pot and media for years and it was acidic. There was some root rot when I got it.

Black leaf tips.

I’ll attach pictures. Let me know what all this stuff is please. Thank you.

The white patches all look like old scarring. I have a few Phals that excrete sap from their leaves. I'm not sure about the black leaf tips, but if there are no signs of it spreading, I wouldn't worry about it.

I don't see anything that concerns me. It's just a poor neglected plant that has lived a hard life, and it's got the scars to show for it. Get it potted in an appropriate medium, treat it right, and it will recover for you quite nicely back to it's previous splendor.
