Where to get Phal. Sogo Relex
Default Where to get Phal. Sogo Relex

Hi,

I’ve been searching for this orchid for a while now and have only been able to find it on eBay (from Poland) and I recently see that Orchids by Hauserman has them in stock, but it looks quite different from most of the images I’ve seen. I can only really conclude that the lighting is different and maybe the flower just opened? It may be a seedling population and I’ve been looking at mericlones? I’m really not sure but I’d like to get some advice before consulting Hausermanns.

Thank You

Sogo Relex is a name for the cross, right? If that's the case, then a cross results in a large variety of closely-related plants. Closely genetically-related.

If you're after a particular cultivar from that cross, then it will be necessary to find out the name of that cultivar.

A cross results in a seed pod - with lots and lots of seeds in it. Each seed that turns into a plant will be related to other seeds from that same pod --- like brothers and sisters. And - unless something unusual happens such as identical twin occurs - then each plant coming from the seed pod will have different features/appearance --- eg. flower appearance/features.

If a particular flower (from a plant that grew from a particular seed) has some features that somebody likes a lot, then they use 'cloning' techniques to clone the particular plant (having that particular looking flower) - and produce lots of them ----- and the clones usually have the same DNA - considered as perfect clones. Anything that comes out of the 'cloning' process that doesn't have identical DNA as the original will not be a perfect 'clone' ------ and probably not considered to be a 'clone' as such.

You are likely looking for a particular plant from that cross ------ ie. not just any plant from that cross.

Do you have a photo of the version you have looking for? If you are after that specific look and not specifically Sogo Relex, we may be able to give you names of Phals that look like what you want.

Seems like most Sogo Relex out there look like the photo Hausermann's have, and the original (Just checked the Dummen Orange catalog, company which bought over Sogo a couple years ago) also looks like that.

I’ve heard they’ve had the in stock before, but I don’t see the currently for sale in their fall 2019.

---------- Post added at 01:16 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:23 PM ----------

The website for whatever reason won’t let me include a link. The shape of the flower I’m more looking for has petals that are larger and more round, with the bottom sepal extending lower than the the petals. The bottom sepals in Hausermanns photos look rather pointed compared to the ones I’ve seen. There’s a picture on this forum titled “Phal Sogo Relex in bloom from Big Leaf Orchids” that looks more like the cultivars I’m looking for. Thank you.

I think that's one of the most understandable explanations of crosses vs clones I've ever read. Don't want to hijack the thread, but kudos to you.
