Question - tylandsia cyanea seems dead, what to do?
Default Question - tylandsia cyanea seems dead, what to do?

Hi everyone,
New here, but hopefully can get some great help from what I've read it's a community of experts in garden matters.
I have a tylandsia cyanea which seems to be dieing. I've done everything I could find to keep it, and I got two flowers at a certain time, after that no more. Then I decided to wait while the possible new offsprings were taking nutrients from the main plant. I saw it going from pink to green and then to brown. No more flowers have bloomed. See pics attached.
My question is: is it completely dead? Is there anything to do with it? Any comments? Any help would be extremely well received.
Thank you in advance.

On the "Totally Off Topic" thread at the very bottom of the forums list, there's a member named kg5 who has tons of info about Tillandsia care. You may find help there.

Tillandsia House Air Plants Lichens

Yours is a bromeliad, but perhaps similar care as it's often grown as an "air plant." No idea on its care from me, other than the bromeliads I've grown flower, then have to produce pups before flowering again. Good luck!

Tillandsia cyanea is one of the Tillandsia that needs to be grown in substrate. It looks like the flower spike is dead / dying but the plant itself is fine. It’s possible it was mostly done flowering when you got it. I don’t have this species but within a few months you’ll likely get new growths at the base of the parent plant (if it follows the same pattern as most other Tillandsia). The new growths will flower when they mature. The original plant won’t flower again but can still live for years and produce more offshoots.

Well that's good to know. I do know it should be in a substrate, because it's actually a bromeliad. So it's same from the standpoint of blooming one go-round, then pups thereafter. Learned something new today.

Your plant is fine, cut the drying inflorescence and wait for pups. Hardest thing is to figure out how not to overwater, and be patient.

Sorry for not responding, although I have read you all. I had a very busy week.
I'm glad the plant is fine, so then pacience is not an issue. I can wait to let it grow again. It's true that maybe I bought it when flower period was finished, didn't think of that. Hopefully with some time it will get nice-looking again. Thanks for every single piece of advice, you made us happy to see that we were not doing too badly after all. Many thanks, guys! Have a nice weekend you all.
