Welcome to the OB, Idiggi! We can certainly help you out, but the description that one of your plants has dark patches on the roots doesn't give us much to go on. A photo would be very helpful, if you are able to provide one. I'm not sure, but some here say that you must make five posts before you are allowed to post photos. Can't hurt to try now, though.

There are many facets to good orchid culture, and it would be helpful to know certain things, like how long have you had these plants? What are they potted in, meaning type of container and potting media? Did you repot them or are they still in the same conditions as when you bought them? Do these containers have adequate drainage?

How often do you water, and how are you determining that they need or don't need water? You're not watering with ice cubes, are you?

Also, what are your lighting conditions like? Where do you have the plants situated, i.e., western window, eastern window, not near any window, etc.? Are you using any artificial light?

What are the daytime and nighttime temps like in your home where the orchids reside?

This is some of the basic information that the members here are going to need in order to offer advice on any improvements you could make to your culture.

There is a thread here in the beginner's forum which is a sticky at the top of the menu, entitled "The Phal Abuse Stops Here." Don't be put off by the funny title. It's a long, meandering thread, which can keep you busy reading for many days, but it is full of helpful information to those new to growing Phals. Here's a link:

The Phal abuse ends here.

Hope to hear back from you soon!

Welcome to orchidboard! I was going to link to the same thread, it has lots of useful information.

For the brown patches, it's probably harmless, those sort of patches on exposed roots are rather common. But a photo wouldn't hurt!

Welcome, Idiggi. If the system is telling you that you don't have enough posts to put a picture up, just go to some other threads and make a few random posts and you will have enough in no time.

If the problem is that you have no way to take a picture, then read along in the Phal Abuse Ends Here thread. Many others have posted pictures there, and you may find something that looks like your plant's condition. Good luck!

Post 3 more throwaway posts and you will be able to post pics. The magic number is 5 posts before you can post photos.

This was a safegaurd put in place several years ago, when we were drowning in all sorts of spam. The 5 post limit was to give moderators time to see and deal with spammers before they started posting inappropriate photos.

Now that you have 6 posts, you should be able to add photos. If you still have trouble, let us know! (if vertical photos attach sideways, that's normal, it's a bug with the system)

Is it a photo taken with your phone or a camera? There is a size limite for photos, so usually any camera photos are too large, while phone phones are usually ok. You can also have a look at this thread for instructions.
