Hi there,

I was wondering if anyone that is selling or trading product would be so kind as to post whether they are in the USA or Canada.

We in Canada cannot get live plants from the USA as far as I know anyway. Seeds are okay though.

Thanks,

Joanne

I think you can get plants as long as they don't contain any soil. Orchids mounted on bark, tree fern should be OK.

Some time ago, while traveling to Florida I had planned to bring back some orchids. After checking out the Canadian requirements (import permit, phytosanitary certificate and CITES). I soon discovered that many of the government departments involved had no idea who was responsible or what documentation they really needed.

Regardless, I preceded to get all the possible documentation before leaving and from the US growers.

I had declared my 2 boxes full of plants upon returning to Canada and going through customs at the airport. I was pretty anxious and had my paperwork all ready. The customs officer simply asked if the plants were potted in soil, I replied no, fir bark. That was it, no other questions, no box inspection and no review of my expensive paperwork! Go figure

It all depends on the customs. Sometimes you get someone who doesn't care or doesn't want to do the extra work, sometimes they will hassle you about a granola bar, because it contains seeds :S

When we flew from Singapore to Australia, I had my orchids ceased by the customs. Australia is a special case, because of it's unique affinity to be over run by non indigenous or feral plants and animals did.

I did declare them, but because of the strict quarantine laws they had to be destroyed. Customs guy was really nice about it and did appreciate me declaring them. He tried his best to let me go through with them, considering that I was just passing through Australia. He looked hard in his big "customs" manual but it was no go... then he said that I would have no problems bringing them back to Canada as they contained no soil... for all I know they're probably now blooming in his Brisbane flat :-)
