Talking Hi!

Hi! Im new to the site but not to the orchids.Ive been growing them for 4 years.I used to have a large collection with over 10 different genera ( and YES i am bragging--its fun so HAHA) but they all caught a virus-even my newly unflasked Cattleya chocolate drops!!!-and died. Now i only have 9 different types but they are doing great .I have my eye on a couple of other orchids-I couldnt buy them because, well Im 12 years old,my allowance isnt very big-but I will soon be getting Maxillaria sanguinea,Ludisia discolor and Spathoglottis kimballiana. So if you know anything eye-popping that i should know, or if you have one of them-let me know please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(I know I talk a lot--deal with it)

Welcome Orchid Princess!

Welcome to the OrchidBoard! You will learn alot here and probally even share alot too. There is so many
genera to get into. You have only hit the icing on the cake. I wish I started growing orchids at your age; I'd be so ahead of the game.

First remember that your orchids need air movement. As this keeps down the pests and/or fungus. Also when triming orchids, spray or pour your scissors with rubbing alcohol. You want to sterilize your equipment. You would not want someone to do surgery on you with unsterile tools?????

If you see a fungus, you want to either take a new, one sided razor blade and cut back till you see green. Or you could use a creme brulee torch to sterilize the scissors. Ask your parents as they may not want you to do this unsupervised.

Another way is do do preventive spraying. At my greenhouse I always do preventive maintenence. Also you need to spray with different things as the orchids will become immune to always spraying the same spray.

Email me thru the OrchidBoard if you ever have any questions. I am a woman, 48 years old and I have an orchid store which you can see online here in Houston, Texas. Actually I'm sure that everyone here at the OrchidBoard will be happy to answer any of the questions that you may have.

Happy Growing and nice to meet you.
