Importing Orchids and other houseplants into Canada.
A new story entry has been added:
Importing Orchids and other houseplants into Canada.

It may be of interest to Canadians to know that it is legal to import Orchid plants for your own use into Canada. They should be raised in the continental U.S. There is a limit of 50 plants. They should be part of your luggage. No phytosanitary certificate is required.

So, say I move to Canada, I can take my plants? Does it cost extra? I love my plants, but I can't send $50 dollars apiece on them.

There are no expenses involved but they may want to inspect your plants for diseases

So, to make it really clear to me, if this is correct, I could buy from Big leaf (for example) and they would be able to send it up as if they were selling to another grower in the states?????

I did a little research on this subject and found this:
http://www.canadianorchidcongress.ca.../importing.pdf
As Rudi stated, the plants should be part of your luggage if you are travelling from the U.S. into Canada. There are many other details to take into consideration.
I don't think this means anybody in Canada can place an order at a U.S. company and not need permits for them

That's right Sue, It awhole different ball game when importing from the USA in Canada.
Mary, I've looked into this about a year ago, The price was 150.00 (per order) for permits and such to get them here into canada.

I bought 2 orchids at Marie Selbys Botanical Gardens in Sarasota Florida. Then I started to worry about getting them over the border into Canada. My sister had brought back orchids to Vancouver with papers she found online.
So I started searching online while in Florida and found this site and Rudi Kroon and cb977s message and link. Printed the paper work and had no problems with the border guards.
On the declaration form you are given on plane I declared that I had 2 bare root orchids. When we landed the guard just asked if I found them on the ground or in a tree and thats when I showed him my sales receipt from Marie Selby Botanitacal Gardens and had the other paper work ready which he didn't ask for after seeing the receipt. Two guards questioned me but they didn't seem to think there was a problem that I was bringing them over. I did have them stuffed in my carry on so they could see them if they wanted.
It was free to bring them over the border.
