Charlie: I have not used any of the free blogging services as I work with design and web so I know how to handle the different components on my own. I also know that I enjoy being 100% in charge of all the technical stuff - part of the fun for me. If you feel the same way it is definitely worth reading up on how to host your own site. The wordpress community is awesome. But if you rather just get on with blogging without being bogged down with the technical details I think that the free hosted blog is a really good way to go.
