I believe it was by accident. I am not familar with Anselia nilotica, but it is possible that like many orchids it does like to have its feet wet.
One of the most important things to concern yourself with when using hydorponics to grow orchids is that you never want stagnet water. Your medium should be a fixed medium and the water should always be depleated before it is replenished.Oxygen is very important to the root zone.

It is true that oxygenation is essential and the pot in which I had grown Ansellia was a clay pot and well areated by millions of microscopic pores that obviously kept the water turning sour as well as the fact the plant got its daily recharge of fresh water that displaced some of the older lot! That explains how there was no rotting of roots for long when you know how fussy orchids could be about the medium.
