Default BLC. Keowee 'Newberry' inherited

A new blog entry has been added:

BLC. Keowee 'Newberry' inherited

Quote:
I have inherited a Keowee 'Newberry' orchid and I know nothing about growing orchids.
It is in a wooden frame that is about 15" by 15" and it is 'full' of roots and leaves...no flowers at this time. Is it doable for me to grow this orchid or is it so touchy that I should get rid of it? What kind of care does it need ?

I bought a very small one about a year ago along with some bare root seedlings, all Cattleyas. These were the first Cats I had ever bought. They are all still alive and growing so they can't be too touchy. I bought them from Carter & Holmes and they may still have a picture of a Keowee 'Newberry' in bloom on their website. They are gorgeous. I had to have it! Carol

I wouldn't call them touchy at all, they're very strong growers and flower 2x per year - Spring & fall. The scent is outstanding. Its one of those orchid blooms that fade away and you can't wait for it to come back, you'll miss it out of bloom. The flowers are large & colorful.

I grow mine with 4 -T-8 tubes at 4ft long. I water mine every 5 days during the warmer months and 8 to 10 days thru out the winter with less amount of water, they tend to rest for a few weeks.

I am growing it in a vanda slat basket in a south facing window and it blooms from every new growth every year - a spectacular display!
