Default Brazil Nuts, Rats, Bees, Orchids and Goosebumps

A new story entry has been added:

Brazil Nuts, Rats, Bees, Orchids and Goosebumps

Quote:

few weeks ago I saw an episode of Nature on PBS that told a fascinating and astounding story about orchids, bees, rats, and Brazil nuts and their intricate ecosystem. Thinking about what I saw and learned on that show absolutely gives me goosebumps, even now.

Let me tell you about the Brazil nut tree

I saw that same Nature show a few months ago, and I remember thinking that the orchid looked like a Gongora or Stanhopea. It was tough to tell, though, because they didn't show it for long. It's quite a well done show, tying all the interconnected elements together to illustrate both the elegance of the whole system and its fragility.

That was a great television production for sure...
I remember seeing it and being so fascinated by the gongora that was blooming on it and had to get one!
I have one now and it is in spike! YAY!!
Happy Growing!

Well, next time I find an agouti in the garage I'll think twice before I bludgeon it to death with the nearest heavy object. They are actually kinda cute. I've seen them at the Phoenix Zoo.
Seriously, this is why you should all be using the most nature friendly pesticides and chemicals you can. Notice I said "you". I like my orchids bug free and glow-in-the-dark.
Very cool story though.

Default All more reason to push for Rain Forest Conservation

Everyday amazes me; how animals and plants share a symbolic relationship in nature, on our planet. I believe one of the Stanhopea species (name eludes me) that is pollinated by the bee that you mention.
