Default Cross-Canada move with orchids

A new blog entry has been added:

Cross-Canada move with orchids

Quote:
I just moved fr. Vancouver to Toronto with all most of my chids except for a couple of larger ones that I gave to 2 good friends. It was quite an ordeal bare-rooting all my plants then placing them carefully in zip-lock bags with the tiniest amounts of moisture in a styrofoam lined cardboard box marked 'fragile' and 'this way up'.

Welcome to Ontario Tropical Roots. How did your plants survive the trip??? And how many plants did you move?

Default thanks 4 the warm Ont welcome

I'm excited to be in Ontario. Many more people and orchid lovers. Just got a new phal this morning from a small mom and pop greengrocer. During the move all remaining blooms fell off so this new chid will make things look pretty for the mo. I'm just estatic that orchids are so transportable.

My parents live in Winnipeg and my father is the reason for my orchid fever/addiction. Everytime I fly "home" I return with a backpack (as carry on) full of divisions of his plants. Easy to pack up and they don't complain too much about the few hours in baggies, you do get a few funny looks from fellow passengers at what is sticking out of the back pack....ie....a phrag or 2.

Wish I'd been able to take the chids as carry on but wasn't sure that I could. Since I was moving for good I had too many bags with laptop, personal documents, etc. so the catt that I was hoping to carry as hand luggage had to be checked in too. Good to know that you can take them as carry on.

Would be v. grateful for any tips on growing in an air conditioned environment at 22C and 50% humidity. Plants are all currently huddled together in a west facing sun room away from air vents so temp and humidity is prob higher.
