Jairak vs Oncidium
Default Jairak vs Oncidium

Greetings all,

Can someone share with me what is the difference between a jairak orchid and oncidium? Are we able to differentiate them via pseudobulb or flower shape?

Please advice

Nobody can answer that.

"Oncidium" is a genus, and the term is also used as "oncidium-type" to indicate an intergeneric hybrid that has some of the genus in its background.

"Jairak" is a name applied to hybrids created by Thai breeders, and has been used on any number of different genera, including encyclia, cattleya-types, dendrobiums, tolumnias, and vandaceous plants.

Hi Ray,

No wonder when i googled, even some cattleya is called Jairak too. So basically Oncidium Jairak means an oncidium type created by Thai breeders.

I got confused because i was looking at an oncidium in a nursery, the seller say it is not oncidium, it was Jairak...but i didnt ask further because i was rushing to somewhere else.

Thanks for the information Ray

Not quite. It is a name that SOME SPECIFIC Thai breeders have assigned as part of their registered hybrids' names. There is no such hybrid as Oncidium Jairak. For example, you might register a hybrid as "Vanda Kam Beauty". This is why the use of correct terminology and proper labeling is so important!

Time to find a new nursery, perhaps?

Maybe the nursery was referring to Tolumnia. Tolumnia are in the Oncidium family. “Jairak” is a brand name, like Ford is to motor vehicles, Jairak is to Tolumnia. Through this company’s breeding efforts, Jairak has created a Kalaidescope of pretty, mulithued flowers.

They are well known for developing many Vanda alliance plants, Dendrobium, Cattleya, and many more. This is a large nursery.
