I am certain of my ID that I gave you earlier Epidendrum obrienianum based on your description of the location as well as the appearance. It is, in fact, a reed-stem. E. obrienianum is a very commonly seen escaped Epi throughout the tropical zone. I photographed it in Hawaii and it freely keikis (that's one of the major ways it spreads. The common name Scarlet Epidendrum or Baby Epidendrum, and it is found in lots of color variations including yellow, orange, red, mauve.
