If one were to go to Santa Barbara Orchid Estate, Cal Orchid is a very short block away. With usual traffic, it's 5+ hours on a good day from Santa Cruz.

It all depends on what genera you are looking for. Cool growers, outside orchids, greenhouse warm growers. No one hybridizer has them all. If they do, they are probably buying and reselling but not doing the actual doing their own breeding.

If you are looking for cool growing orchids, primarily Cyms, there is a show and sale April 22,23 in Redwood City with some of the top hobbyist growers in Northern Cal displaying and selling plants. Sacramento Orchid Society has their show/sale April 8, 9 with more warm growing genera available.

I would not consider Santa Barbara Northern California but there are several nurseries there. Two usually combined with one stop are Santa Barbara Orchid Estate and Cal-Orchid, both located on Orchid Drive off Patterson Ave just North of SB on US 101. Hatfield Orchids commercially hybridizes the best Cymbidiums in the area being located just south of SB in Ventura.

And finally, many hobbyist growers will welcome you to visit if you contact them personally.

Not sure if it has been mentioned yet, but The Tiny Jungle in Daly City is relatively new and I've heard many good things!
