Humic Acid questions
Default Humic Acid questions

I've purchased a Humic Acid product from General Hydroponics called "Diamond Nectar" it's analysis is 0-1-1

Does anyone recommend another product?

I'll be using this with K-Lite from Kelly's Korner.

Im going to use the lower end of the dosing recommendations, but I'm curious if anyone has used this product? Also, can I use this with my weekly feed?
Thanks for any help Diamond Nectar — General Hydroponics

What are you hoping it does? What did the person at the shop tell you?

At a soil science lecture years ago, humic acid was explained as a carbon source to feed soil microorganisms and promote their health. I haven't looked at it since. The lecturer said ordinary table sugar could perform the same function. He suggested 1 cup / 240ml to 1 pound / 0.45 kg of table sugar for an acre of turf or orchard, watered in with an irrigation. That would be very little sugar in a 4" pot.

For those using the unimaginative SI units, one acre is the amount of land one man with one ox can plow in one day.

From my reading it helps fertilizer and whatever other nutrients are in the soil, to be taken up by the roots. I've read through some of the threads here on OB, and it seems to be a well regarded additive. From my reading, its naturally found in soil due to broken down plant material, and I imagine since the medium we grow in shouldn't get a chance to break down, or if you're growing in s/h this would be a good supplement. This is my rudimentary understanding. If anyone else can shed more light, I'd greatly appreciate it.

You left out the adjustment for varying day lengths during different plowing / ploughing seasons. My understanding is that ancient statisticians applied several inferential methods to adjust the data to give a reasonable single figure. It's an interesting problem, because human and bovine strength are probably normally distributed, but it is unknown whether the strengths in pairs of human/ox would be correlated. One might imagine strong men selecting fast oxen, but then again, those of superior abilities often prefer to coast. As always, attitude is everything.

Thank you, Connie.

Parts of that article seem to be exceptionally silly, dressed up in fancy words and formulae. I would suspect it's an advertisement, probably written by somebody selling humic acid, and is a good example of why Wikipedia is not always a reliable source of information. Pay attention to the paragraph with heading Criticism, probably written by a different author, and the very last paragraph, which demonstrates the author has no idea of why adobe is made with clay and straw.
