Growing System Recommendations
Default Growing System Recommendations

Orchids. Oh, where to start! What started as an interest has become quite the hobby.

It began with a focus on warm growing plants, mainly Oncidium and Cattleya. They are in a spot of my home that receives a lot of light. All are in spike and doing well. Now I am looking to pick up Paphs and other cool growing plants. Of course that requires a totally different environment....

Seeing that I have recently acquired a nice Alcides roebelenii, I am looking to set up a secondary growing area for these plants. Can y'all provide some recommendations?

I see two options so far. Hang a grow light in a closet (in which case recommendations on a good one would be appreciated) or get something with shelves that could be placed in a spare room. I don't want to spend a fortune but want to make sure I take care of these plants. That comes first.

You are the experts. Suggestions are appreciated!

Since I have been in your situation I would go with the shelf unit and window combo. In a closet, unless you provide a fan, moving air would be a problem.

Do you have recommendaitons on a unit?

I see one good one:

I have found a three shelf version - but I do not believe it has enough space for the plants.

Do you have any other recommendations based on what you've seen?

Thanks!

You can get a modular shelf unit from Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B004BD...110_SY165_QL70) and install the lights yourself. This one comes in 5 shelves, but you can simply remove a shelf if you have tall plants. If you're in the market for something more expensive, Hausermann's has a growing system similar in price to the link you provided. Apparently you can water your orchids without having to move them.
