Default 28 September 2014 Ghost Orchid progress

7 days since last photo. The rate of growth is now accelerated. At this point smaller plants like mine will now cannibalize it's own roots to keep up with the required tissue growth in the buds. At this time HPS and MH lights are used not only to allow the best genetics to be pronounced, but to give it maximum energy to reduce the destruction of itself.

Larger plants experience this to a much lesser degree.

It's on target for 17 October 2014. The other bud was purposefully prevented from expressing itself for 10 days to allow both buds to form precisely 10 days apart meaning just as one flower begins to wilt, the other will be in full bloom so we get 3-4 weeks of Ghost Orchid addictive viewing.

Default Final Pic before blooming

Here is the Ghost Orchid as of October 5, 2014. This is the last photo before blooming, so next Sunday it should be in full bloom.

Default A wedding gift

I started growing orchids about 3 years ago. Just over two years ago we wanted to travel to Florida and see the Ghost Orchid but could never get away. We were then engaged and I promised my to-be wife a ghost orchid for the wedding.

So I started growing the ghost orchid to get it to bloom for June 2013...I was successful but missed the wedding by about 4 days.

I now have about 150 orchids but none quite as challenging or time consuming as this little fellow.

It is a gorgeous bloom! I've been growing orchids (crazily ) for two years, and the ghost orchid has been the one that I've been fearful of trying.

Default Slowly turning white

It has fully unfolded.

Now the green is vanishing more and more as it goes bone white.
