Bulbophyllum- bacteria/ fungus, should I cut affected part Male
Default Bulbophyllum- bacteria/ fungus, should I cut affected part

I live in Miami. Rain season started early and strong.
I bought this plant right before the start of the rain season. I first had it protected, and progressively moved it to a spot where it has more sun (9 am till 1pm), but it also gets a lot of rain as well.
The plant had been blooming almost continuously since I got it in May, in fact it is in spike now.
Two weeks ago, I noticed 1 leaf was rapidly turning yellow with fungal spots. I moved the plan under an awning and treated the branch with Draconil.
Should I wait? Should I continue spraying the plant, if so how often? Should I cut the leaf entirely? One other leaf has one spot but seems to be stable.
I have thought about attaching the plant to a Pygmy palm where the light would be filtered most of the day but would also get lots of rain in the process.
Thank you in advance for the info

I think it's gotten too much light.

Might be normal shedding of an old leaf. I don't grow Bulbos, so I don't know how long they hold foliage

The lesions on your leaves look like a fungus to me but I also think I'd take it out of the rain and water it in a more "controlled" consistent fashion. It needs bright light but when it's raining and overcast, I'd be careful about the watering, especially if it's already moist.

Try a systemic fungicide such as Thiomyl. Dunk it for about 15 minutes and then repeat in a week to 10 days. Continue giving it bright light but not direct sun. (Cattleya light) It should be okay. That may be an old lead but I'd be interested in not spreading the fungus.

Reconsider mounting it on a Pygmy Date unless you are available to water it every day. While we do have a rainly season in Florida....we also have our dry seasons which won't work for a bulbophyllum. They are very thirsty and like moist conditions.

Good luck with it!

Thank you to all of you. It was by the side of the house and got too much rain. The vendor had said the plant liked water and not too much light, so I did not really worry about till I saw the leaf. It is in a horrible plastic pot and I would like to repot it, what kind of potting medium should I use?

Should I wait to cut the affected branch! Can it be healthy again after being so yellow?

Thank you.

I'd wait. It might well be that it's an old bulb and leaf. I'd just watch it. I have several bulbies and living in Central Florida, I grow them in a combination of orchiada, NZ sphag, lava rock, sponge rock and top it all off with sphag. They really seem to like that mixture.

Hi. I mount almost all my bulbos. And water daily or twice a day depending on the heat n weather here. I find they do so much better mounted. Less prone to slugs n other insects And less likely to rot. Just hv to remember to mist and water them.
