Growing orchids from flask....questions. Female
Default Growing orchids from flask....questions.

I want to try to grow orchids from flask. Primarily cattleya and schomburgkia hybrids. So, I have several questions. 1) what type of medium is best? (I am in Miami) 2) what size pots do I need? 3) any other special equipment? 4) how much light do I give them? 5) do I fertilize? 6) how much watering do they require?

Anything else I should know???

Last April, I got 2 flasks. One with Cattleyas, one with Vandas. They had been unattended, in the Birmingham Botanical Gardens' laboratory, for about 4 months. The fellow who had flasked them had passed away, and the director came upon them and offered them up to our orchid society. They had already started to perish. To date, most of the Catlleyas, have died, but most of the vandas have survived.

I potted them in semi-hydro, and used laundry detergent measuring cups (after drilling holes) for their containers. In the background of the attached picture, is the smallest container that I bought from Ray. I planted 3 or 4 Vandas in that one.

The Vandays loved this setup. The Cattleyas were either too far gone, or didn't care for it as much. I have about 3 or 4 Cattleyas left.

In the last couple of months, instead of watering them as I did before, I now mist them twice a day. They all seem to enjoy that more, and the LECA really lends itself well to misting.

Good luck!
