Coelogyne cristata, fall-winter growing conditions? Male
Default Coelogyne cristata, fall-winter growing conditions?

I've been growing C. cristata since January, and the plant has performed quite well this summer, despite being in warm conditions here in Georgia. Five new growths this season.

The Baker culture sheets indicate that in the native habitat, winter night low temperatures drop to roughly 30 degrees F on average for 2 months, and natural temps can drop to a 15 F extreme. My question is, how cold should I let it get in cultivation? Is there any benefit to dropping the temperatures into the mid 30s F (this would be outdoors)? Or, should I keep it warmer than that?

This plant stays very wet in the summer. I plan to maintain it drier in the winter (but not completely dry). After 2 months of cooler & drier, it would be brought indoors with the other plants.

Any culture suggestions would be appreciated.

I don't grow any of these at all so I cannot help you. They are very pretty when in bloom, though. Hope you get some good advice.

the night temps on my window gives the plant the cooler nights and the day temperatures are warmer because of my winter double glass pane.
maybe this fall you can let it stay outdoors until a week before frost comes(do not believe the 30F misinformation=it is frost conditions)....your plant will die even for just an overnight exposure to frost. The water inside the cells of the plant would expand and turn to ice and when defrosted by midday the whole plant will turn into mush.

In situ it is constantly exposed to fog and mist....very bright winters( no leaves up the trees )....up in the Himalayas it is protected by thermal up on the trees and it is covered by a coat of moss and debris so the snow don't really affect it (its like it has a thick fur coat)
