I've had good luck with trays, fittings, and hose from Worms Way. They have an online store with hydroponic trays of all sizes. I have a deep tray into which I installed near the top on one side a barbed drain fitting. I have a hose running from the barbed fitting into a drain. I can water in place, and the overflow serves as extra humidity but will still drain as the pan gets too full. Although it wasn't inexpensive, it was very reasonable for the quality of the materials and fact that there were so many size choices. Good luck!

Carrie - I learn SO MUCH for other growers, that I feel it is my responsibility to share whatever I have learned.

The more we share, the better for all of us.

The pull-out drawer is an interesting idea, but I think that you'll find it much more practical to have an "overflow"; if you want to DIY one, see the link Ray posted; otherwise, you can buy something called a "bulkhead fitting" from most DIY/hardware stores; get one that has a hose "nipple" on it so you can easily attach your drain hose to it with some jubilee clips. You can even make your own. Mistking also sell some nice ones.

If you want to leave some water in there for "humidity" then drilling the bulkhead into the side/rear at the level you want will be easiest (and means you don't have to modify your furniture...!).

The suggestions others had about eggcrate is a good one - I would suggest you don't have it right up at the "top lip" of the underneath container, but rather leave a 2+ inch gap from the top of the plastic container until the eggcrate starts, which should stop quite a lot of accidents and spray. If you don't have the tools or equipment to easily create a "lip" for the eggcrate to rest on, you can simply use a number of the same sized plastic or ceramic flower pots upside down on which you rest the eggcrate; if you like you can affix them to the bottom (or to the eggcrate) either with something like silicone, or to the eggcrate with cable ties.

Ideally, make sure your "drain bucket" is at least as big as whatever bucket you will use to water with - and if you use a hose... well, keep an eye out. I once flooded my parent's dining room when I forgot about the very thin hose I had refilling my fishtank very slowly when I wasn't much older than you... Oops.

Good luck!

p.s. one caveat - silicone on its own (as per Ray's overflows) generally doesn't seal that well to most plastics - I have seen a LOT of leaking DIY tanks in aquaculture facilities leaking all over the place due to this!

It's nice to see another young person enjoying orchids! I find it interesting that most of the young people growing orchids ar guys..where are all the chicas?! And if you haven't, join your orchid local orchid society, I don't know where the MOS meets but I think it's in your area; and I have some friends there that would love another young person!!

Aside from my excitement about another young person I have the same struggles as you with growing inside and water I've wanted to do something similar to what you're saying. Good ideas, especially if you're crafty and good at DIY stuff! If you don't want to build everything, you can get a hydroponics tray like this one and put a grate over top of it.
