Can I use Copper Soap (copper octanoate) on my Soph. coccinea w/ moss cushion? Male
Question Can I use Copper Soap (copper octanoate) on my Soph. coccinea w/ moss cushion?

I think I just messed up! I just received a new Sophronitis, cross (Sophronitis coccinea X Laelia dayana coerulea) and it had a really cool moss cushion that was growing on it. The foliage had some spots on it and without thinking I sprayed it with Copper Soap (copper octanoate) in case of fungus. Several hours later I happen to read that copper will kill mosses; it is my understanding that Soph., especially the coccinea, almost require a mossy bed to grow in. I have flushed the plant with R/O water and was wondering - is there a chance that the moss will live and with a cross such as this, is the moss required? I am somewhat baffled as to the culture of such crosses and have sent a message to the vendor, but have not heard back. Any input will be appreciated.......

No, the moss is not required. But the plant has adopted to that growing condition and will react if the moss is taken away.
Though it may be set back some it will survive and adopt to your condition with time.

Default Copper Soap

Thanks Magnus;
The copper soap has already done it's deed - the moss is shriveled and dying back. Hope it survives the alteration. Darn - I really liked the mossy muffin-top!
