Default Preparing and packing a plant for judging

I have a Phal violacea that has been recommended for AOS judging. What should be done to prep it and how should I pack it in the car so it doesn't get damaged in transit?

Thanks.

Cheers.
Jim

I've never had to take plants for judging, but have transported blooming orchids before. I put one of those plastic molded trays (with holes for the pots, if you see what I mean) and put it in a cardboard box of roughly the same size. The plant won't budge in there and then you just have to secure the box in the car.

We use those trays like Camille does for transporting orchids to shows. They really keep the plant in it's place. the garden centres should have lots for free right now.

Good luck with your plant!

Basically Jim, just use your common sense in transport.
1) You do not want it to slide or tip over so place it in a larger box that will not slip/tip on the seat or car deck surface. Use the seat belt if necessary. or brace the box with bricks or other boxes.
2) Do not let the flower/flower stake bounce around to hit anything. Cross tie on a temporary, extra stake or use cotton.
3) If you are driving during the day, be sure the sun from the window does not hit the plant.
4) Do not let the air conditioner blow directly on the plant either.

As far as cleaning and staking, this was answered on the Beginner Forum where the same question was asked. I would only add to NOT ALLOW the stake to go above the top flower of the stem, and preferably lower.

Good luck,

Cym Ladye
