Pleione questions regarding dormancy

I have a Pleione praecox, a fall-flowering variety that finished blooming a month ago. It has only 1 pbulb, and from what I read, the spent flower spike will magically transform next year's new growth. It is potted in sphag, and I've been keeping it dry ever since it stopped flowering. Temps is 65deg F.

I just noticed short tiny roots growing from the base of the spent flower spike (or, should I call it, the new growth). I thought it was not supposed to do anything while dormant. Should I still continue withholding water until spring?

P.S. And I think I even see green leaf tips emerging from the tip of the spent flower spike. This is honestly the strangest orchid I've ever grown.

The controlling factor for dormancy in Plieones is the temperature. This year's roots die off completely, so it really doesn't matter whether it is kept wet or dry.

I'm afraid 65°F is much too warm to keep Plieones dormant and your plant might already have started to grow. If that is the case, your best bet must be to grow it on, and keep it below 40°F when it goes dormant again.

Ok thanks for the info! I moved it downstairs where it's slightly cooler. It's started growing more roots but the leaves haven't really changed. I'll see what happens.

I keep my Pleione in the fridge during the winter. Works perfectly! I'll take it out when it starts to grow some leaves in the spring.
