Can only say that I tried it - potted around 500 plants in it of all types and will never use it again. The plants didnt do well. It makes the greenhouse smell like old rotten tires also. There are a lot better potting materials on the market.

We have a society member that was growing Catt's in it. They seemed to do well enough but I'll second the "stink issue". After getting plants back from a show, another member housed them for about a week and was not thrilled that the 2 plants he was caring for smelled up his entire 20x60 greenhouse.

After hearing the comments i wouldn't try it. If you do go for lava rock remember it dries quickly which is why it is good for a vanda grower such we myself who has a heavy hand. Mixing bark will make the need repotting much sooner.

I use the imperial mix for dendrobiums at repotme.com and they really seem to do well in it: Dendrobium Imperial Orchid Mix

One of the best things when we repot orchids it's the smell of the bark ! The rubber mulch stinks!
