DO you buy Home Depot "baggy orchids"?

Yes, but my best success were with the bagged bare root orchids from Walmart. I lucked out and arrived in the garden section just as the stock person was opening a fresh box.

Here is a pic of the V.Robert Delight "Dark Red Kru-Chom"

This was grown indoors for two-three years. It has recently been out in the shade house for about six weeks. Note the first major aerial roots. This orchid has never bloomed. If I may say so, it looks good enough to eat.

Someone once told me that you can tell something about the flower by the color of the ends of the roots. Any ideas about that?

Your V.Robert Delight "Dark Red Kru-Chom, assuming it's an orchid in a bag, you have had this vanda indoors for a few years without a bloom???? mine has not bloomed either, slighted growth pattern over my other bagged one.

Yeah, it's an orchid from Lowes from a bag. I wonder if we have a bad hybrid? How long have you had yours?

JT, I found out that this is a huge hybrid. It is a giant flower and just as giant a plant. Be patient.
They are not BS yet.

I have purchased a few of them myself an have had good luck with most of them. I don't buy the seedlings in the 1.5-2 inch pots though, their fradgile enough and it's not like you can examine the roots through the plastic bag and white mesh! I recycle the white mesh though... I fold it inside itself to make a round pot and fasten orchid basket hangers to them. Stuff them with whatever media you want then presto, a hanging basket for whatever!

Hey Charles -
I grow lots of vandaceous plants, and I believe that your vanda is not big enough to bloom. The 'full' vanda hybrids that I have (V x V) tend to be 2' or taller before they bloom. I have a gordon dillon x robert's delight that is over 4' tall, and I've cut it down at least twice. It did not bloom until it hit over three feet.
Vanda x Ascda. will bloom about the size of your plant, but not a vanda/vanda.
On the plus side, the inflorescences and flowers are generally pretty impressive.
Zone 9a ought to get you flowers in a few years, though.

p.s. Cheryl - an east window is not a good vanda spot! Nearly full sun, lots of air, lots of water.

Yeah, that is what I have come to understand. I have seen some last weekend and they were as you described. Whenever you see a Vanda that is 2-3 feet tall, expect a large BS from it.
